Western Digital has updated its portable hard drives, coinciding with the launch of the Scorpio Blue 1TB. The new model is called WD My Passport Essential SE, and its main innovation over previous Passport is its ability: two models of 750 GB and 1 TB of capacity.

Maintaining the vast majority of characteristics: same size (15 × 80 × 126 mm), weight (180 grams) and USB 2.0 interface to connect the disk to the computer. As is customary in external hard drives for the vast majority of manufacturers, the new WD My Passport Essential are several additional software, such as to add a certain level of security to encrypt data, or programs for backup and synchronization information.

For now only be available one color, gray titanium, but Western Digital is likely to increase the range of colors in the future to maintain the range of previous models.

Regarding prices, we are 300 and $ 200 for WDMET10000 and WDMET7500TN, the names of specific models of 750 GB and 1 TB, respectively. Like what happened to the internal hard drives this morning, the My Passport Essential are available in SE United States and the rest of the world will arrive in coming days.

By the way, and a half years ago we analyzed a Passport of the first models with 250 GB capacity and with features very similar to the discs presented today. The results were generally quite interesting.

The WD Scorpio Blue is the first hard drive 2.5-inch magnetic plate that reaches the terabytes of capacity. That is, we get what we can and in some laptops to use two hard drives, but saving one. The paste is that, although it is a SATA 2.5-inch, has a thickness of 12.5 mm, which is not suitable for the majority of laptops, using the standard 9.5 mm.

The thickness of the WD Scorpio Blue is largely due to its high capacity. If the majority of discs will suffice with a single magnetic plate or two at most, this new model from Western Digital carries three plates, each with 333 GB, and is therefore a slightly thicker disk than usual. The manufacturer has also announced another 750 GB model, which retains the same measures as the 1TB.

Prices for the WD Scorpio Blue in the United States will be $ 250 for 1TB and $ 190 for 750 GB. For now, the price is the main argument in favor of the magnetic plate instead of SSD, since those prices for the solid-state memory still moves below 100 GB. Pity the thickness of these new discs, since laptops tend to lose more and the standard 12.5 mm is doomed to disappear.

First we have about 32 nanometers in micros, a new manufacturing process that will bring improvements to the existing 45-nanometer micro. It is what we have been saying forever, a new generation with a higher yield but a lower consumption and less heat generated.

Although many details still need to know, the Intel Core i3 will have a model with four processor cores, operating under the LGA1156 socket (the same as the Core i5) and manufactured under the Nehalem platform, which is not a surprise absolute, since all the new generation is based on this architecture.

Release dates, from TechPowerUp point to the end of 2009, with prices still unknown but it should not be high, since we’re talking about a supposedly lower-middle range in the new products from Intel. Maybe around 100 or 150 euros, depending on the model chosen.

And about the performance, the first tests conducted on the Core i3 reveal a very good performance because of the overclock, although it is an unimportant aspect of the public household and less specialized. To find your natural power still have to wait some more months.

The twill AMD would be the evolution of those AMD Sempron, but adapted to modern times: a low range of domestic processors in 45 nanometers, and AM3 sockets for compatibility with DDR2 and DDR3 memories.

AMD twill be an interesting option for those looking for a computer to perform the most basic tasks. With a price that may be around $ 40 per unit, provide an ideal performance, but adjusted for the common user.

Perhaps the least like this family is that some models will only have a core process. However let us be realistic: For certain tasks no matter what the processor is a multicore , twill and AMD are directed toward these tasks.

Processors can be interesting for those who simply want a computer to surf the internet or using office software. Nothing that we have one more performance CPUs will have to go to higher levels and AMD (Athlon II is the midrange of the manufacturer) or Intel (in this case go to future or current i5 Core Core 2 Duo desktop).

Still no official launch date, but we could take them into the final stretch of 2009 or early 2010. The price of AMD twill be a low priority, although as always offer a few models with different potentials.
